Advisor Team
Wakefield James has established an Advisory Board of influential
members of the business community, many of whom have played
important roles in the investment success of the partners.
The Advisory Board functions as a resource for the management
teams as they grow their companies both internally and through
acquisitions.
Franklin R. Anderson
Mr. Anderson purchased Custom Molders, a plastic
injection molding company, in a leveraged buyout in 1983.
He developed a large customer base including such companies
as Ford Motor Company, General Motors, AT&T, Xerox, and
IBM. During his time with the company, he grew the enterprise
from approximately $1.5 million to approximately $22 million
in sales. The firm was recognized as one of the highest quality
firms in its industry and received numerous awards from its
customers. Mr. Anderson sold the company in 1993.
Mr. Anderson has served as Director of the Durham Chamber
of Commerce, was Commissioner of the North Carolina Alcoholic
Beverage Control Commission, and was a Director of Greensboro
National Bank. Currently, he is a Trustee of North Carolina
Central University and works as a Total Quality Management
advisor for small and medium sized businesses.
Paul W. Marshall
Professor Marshall is a member of the faculty at
the Harvard Business School. At Harvard, he teaches a course
entitled "Running and Growing the Small Company"
in the second year curriculum.
During his tenure at Harvard, Professor Marshall took a leave
of absence to become CEO and Chairman of Rochester Shoe Tree
Company. In this role, he led the company through a four-year
turnaround effort and implemented a major reorganization and
cost reduction program. Through his efforts, he was able to
improve the profitability of the organization in the face
of declining sales. In addition, he is also the co-founder
of Putnam, Hayes and Bartlett, a management consulting firm
in the Boston area.
Ralph K. Shelton
Mr. Shelton founded Southeast Fuels, Inc., a marketer
of coal, oil, and diesel fuel in 1984. He currently serves
as CEO and President of the company. Southeast Fuels primarily
sells coal to major industrial companies and utilities. Mr.
Shelton has been successful in growing both the revenue and
profitability of the company.
Prior to 1984, Mr. Shelton was the Manager of Energy Procurement
for a Fortune 500 Company. He chaired the Greensboro Chamber
of Commerce Board in 1996 and the Greensboro Metropolitan
YMCA Board in 1991.
Currently, Mr. Shelton chairs the Moses Cone/Wesley Long
Community Foundation Board and is a Director of the NCCBI
(North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry). In addition,
Mr. Shelton serves on the Babcock School of Management Advisory
Board at Wake Forest University.
Paul and Peter Centenari
Messrs. Centenari are successful buy, build, and consolidate
entrepreneurs. Soon after graduating from the Harvard Business
School in 1986, they completed an LBO of the Atlas Container
Corporation in 1988.
The Centenari's have been innovative in growing the business
internally through open book management. In addition, they
have successfully acquired nine other companies in a regional
consolidation strategy. They have grown the business from
$5 million in revenue in 1988 to approximately $30 million,
presently. Growth has come both through acquisitions and improvements
in customer service and quality.
